The Roots of AZKSD: Phoenix
The longtime presence of Kemscrima-Doh in Arizona can be traced back to the late 1980's when Keith Tularaksa ran a Martial Arts program in Phoenix, AZ. Keith remains a long time loyal student of Sifu Glenn Abrescy, as he was one of the original students of Sifu's Tamaraw Kempo Kuntao Escrima when it was being taught at Travis Air Force Base of Fairfield, CA. Keith, formerly a flight engineer for the United States Air Force, was stationed at Travis at the time. Today, he periodically makes the trip to KSD functions in Merced, CA or to Prescott Family Karate when they host a seminar for Sifu Abrescy. Keith currently resides in Mesa, AZ with his daughter Sydney and fiancee Tori.
The Roots of AZKSD: TucsonOriginally training under Sifu Abrescy in Merced, CA while in High School, long time Blackbelt Phil Winters is responsible for starting the Kemscrima-Doh program in Tucson, AZ. Unique to most other Kemscrima-Doh affiliates, it was run on the premises of an IBM plant during the lunch hour. What began as a small training group, would eventually flourish to a group of dedicated practitioners who would continue the program beyond Phil Winters' years in Tucson, AZ. Phil's Blackbelt descendants include Gerald S. Pepe and Frank Saavedra, two individuals who continued to teach upon his move back to California. Keeping the Tucson tradition strong, James Ratliff, Harry Crim, Todd Schlomer, and husband and wife Robert and Vivian Hutchins would go on to achieve Blackbelt under Gerald S. Pepe. Although the Tucson program is not currently active, we recognize both Phil Winters and his students for their efforts in contributing to the Arizona Kemscrima-Doh network. Today, Phil currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife Brenda.
